While Windows Media Player has improved over the years, it still can’t play some of the most popular types of music and video files. In Windows XP Windows Media Player can’t even play a DVD, meaning that you have to rely upon third party pieces of software.

There is a brilliant alternative available. You can install a free media player called VLC, which will play all the popular audio and video files without having to install add-ons or codecs. VLC will also allow you to play a DVD without having to worry about using alternative software just to play a DVD.

VLC Player can be downloaded free of charge from the following website: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
