Hybrid Cloud Computing is a term used to describe a mixture of cloud computing and local based services. For instance your email system is hosted in the cloud via a hosted exchange platform while your documents and software such as accountancy system, CAD or line of business application is held on your own local server.

Is Hybrid Cloud Computing a good way to start?

Many businesses start with Hybrid Cloud before utilising the cloud for other services. Email is one of the most common services migrated to the cloud, traditionally companies have their own on-site email exchange server provided by your IT support company or bought by somebody in your business some years ago. The downside to this is the software on these servers requires maintenance, upgrades, security, antivirus protection and a regular and reliable backup. This is all in addition to the actual server hardware itself which has its own maintenance and service requirements plus a larger up-front investment.

When you move to the cloud you don’t have to worry about any of this. Your emails are stored in multiple data centres, you are not responsible for any day-to-day maintenance or backups.

How can Hybrid Cloud benefit over traditional cloud?

While traditional cloud methods are a fantastic solution for email systems, local storage is a faster solution for accessing larger files and applications. With Hybrid Cloud you can get the best of both worlds, your business can take advantage of the scalability and cost-effectiveness of the cloud while keeping larger data and applications on your local network so they run as fast as possible.

Hybrid cloud can also be used to protect your local data; documents and larger files can be held on a local server within working hours so it’s fast and readily available then during the night while the system is not being used it is backed up to the cloud.
